Bois Blanc Township was established in 1895 and is located in the Straits of Mackinac on Bois Blanc Island. Surrounded by Lake Huron, the island nicknamed “Boblo” is Mackinac County’s southern-most Township. Visitors find 34 square miles of peace and serenity, including 6 inland lakes and acre upon acre of forests and meadows. Bois Blanc Township has no paved streets but the island does have some maintained roads. Residents and visitors arrive at the island either by ferry from Cheboygan (a five-mile passage) or small aircraft from one of the region’s airports. While the wild, undeveloped nature is a big part of Bois Blanc’s appeal, the island does have a general store, a post office, a one-room school and a few other commercial enterprises.
