Kinross Township is located in the central-most part of Chippewa County and was once the home of the Kincheloe Air Force Base, which closed in 1977. The closure initially exacted a heavy economic toll on the region, but today the 120-square-mile Township is home to heavy equipment and steel fabricators, two Michigan correctional facilities, an 18-hole golf course, and the region’s commercial airport – Chippewa County International Airport (CIU). It is also home to the annual Chippewa County Fair.

Geographically speaking, Kinross Township is unique in that it is 30 miles long and four miles wide. The majority of its area is owned by the U.S. Forest Service (Hiawatha National Forest) and the Michigan Department of Natural Resources (Lake Superior State Forest). Forest sites and facilities, combined with other camping and picnicking destinations throughout the Township, make Kinross Township an appealing destination for those in search of peaceful surroundings.
