Luce County was established in 1887 and was named for former Michigan Governor Cyrus Luce. Tourism and recreation play a substantial role in Luce County, thanks to 20 miles of groomed ski trails, 200 miles of groomed snowmobile trails, 30,000 acres of public access forest lands and 658 miles of rivers and streams. As a result, the area has abundant campgrounds, private resorts, and cabin rentals. In 2002, Newberry was designated Michigan’s Moose Capital by the State Legislature.
